Scenes from the 2012 Festival

Festival Co-producers Dr. John Kelley and Jack Sartain report that the Festival was an unqualified success! There was music and dance in the Village of Stone Mountain (not in the park). Band contests, Bluegrass and Old-Time jamming happened throughout the Village in stores, restaurants and “on the corners”. The bands played competitively in a concert area and events were held in conjunction with the Art Station of Stone Mountain.

Jammers gathered on Main Street, in stores, restaurants, out behind the barn, and anywhere else that musical notes could be let loose to wander around the Village.

Instrument workshops were held for fiddlers (with Jim Culliton) and guitarists (with Larry Bennefield). A big Dance (with Janet Sheppard) brought smiles to young and old alike - new dancers and experienced dancers mingled for great fun! An Appalachian Flatfooting/Buckdancing/Clogging class was led by Sharon Moonshine

In addition to Bluegrass and Old-time instrumental music, community dancing was featured. A little flatfoot, buck dancing, clogging and contra dancing was featured. Says co-producer Kelley, “in case the reader is not familiar, country dance includes traditional Georgia square and round dances as well as the more modern Contra dances.  The moves for these community dances are taught before each dance and the “caller” prompts the dancers during the dance.  Live bands provide music. No experience is necessary, if you know your right hand from your left and can follow simple directions you can join in on this fun activity.” Photo of Contra Dancing

Co-producer Sartain says, ”Festival goers brought lawn chairs, dancing shoes, friends and family and joined in the FREE FUN all up and down Main Street. Venders lined Main Street and some side streets, too! Folks were visiting the restaurants and merchants all day.” For more information about Stone Mountain Village, please see: www.stonemountainvillage.com/
